The raising of « white calves » for Paris butchers lost its prominent place in the Pays d’Auge at the beginning of the 18th century, moving to the Paris area itself. The « Pontoise calf » became a profitable activity of farmers in the Vexin ; they raised Normandy cows, and bought and fattened young calves one or two weeks old. When the rail line to Saint-Germain-en-Laye was opened in 1839, farmers started to get better prices for their raw milk, and calf raising went into decline, moving out to the Gâtinais and Brie areas. The fame of the « Gâtinais calf » grew, but around 1870 its production was also declining again because of the arrival of railroads. As early as the end of the 19th century, the raising of « white calves » had moved toward Champagne ; today this type of activity has entirely disappeared from the Paris area.Cairn

The three cases studied share a peculiarity rare otherwise in Normandy : they are known through charters of franchise. These charteres were granted as an outgrowth of a movement of improvement in a neighbouring area of Picardie. They show a mix of influences from Normandy and Picardie, as well as the traditions and economic evolution of the institutions which launched these ventures. While the privileges granted the men of Criquiers in 1305 were less generous than those conceded to Villedieu or Gourchelles over a century earlier, all three documents reveal rural communities of unquestionable vitality.Cairn

In the South of Portugal, the study of peasant claims reveals strong particularities, both historically and from a documentary point of view : The rural communities (organized in municipal concelhos) were born from a convergence of interests uniting the colonists and the legal authorities. Up to around 1250, conflicts were solved through customary negociations which left few explicit references. Later, seignorial control was strengthened for financial reasons, and conflicting claims were translated into legal proceedings. It becomes possible to observe the communities in more details. They turn out to be still largely homogeneous (in spite of a clear trend toward political oligarchy and land concentration), hence their continued combativity ; but they were increasingly compelled to insert themselves within a monarchic system in order to defend their interests.Cairn

Ernest Morin (1828-1900) wrote his memoirs as an owner-occupier « at the dusk of his life », to provide guidance to his heirs in the management of the concern. This document is a rare testimony covering half a century of agricultural history, including the development of single-crop farming in Languedoc, the oïdium and phylloxera crises, and the beginnings of the sales slump in the 1900s. On lands which were suitable to the growing of high-quality wine, Ernest Morin oversaw the creation, then replanting of his vineyard on his own « village plot », all the while careful the self-financing of his business and his keeping abreast of agronomical research.Cairn

After a review of the literature on bovine and ovine epidemics from 1700 to 1850, we examine the successive meanings of the word épizootie since its first use in 1765. The major contagious epizootics are introduced by disease. A chronology and the distribution throughout the country is given for each disease. The xviiith Century, which was dominated by four devastating waves of Cattle Plague is compared to the first half of the xixth Century, when Foot and mouth disease, Pleuro-pneumonia and Sheep-pox became more common and widespread. Glossanthrax, of some concern, but mostly inconsequential, disappeared spontaneously towards the end of the xviiith Century. Other epizootics are taken in account due to their significant presence in certain regions e.g. Anthrax, Pourriture, Mange of the sheep as well as Maladie Rouge in Sologne.Cairn

Few French historians so far have shown interest in the history of wetlands, whether swamps, ponds, peat bogs, etc. While up to recently, wetlands were considered inferior spaces, seen by the political and scientific elites as a nuisance for human life and an economic liability, today they are a topic of considerable public attention. It is important that historians provide wetlands with their temporal dimension, largely undevelopped up to now.Cairn

Under the Old Regime, a protestant community organized itself in Asnières, a small village near the city of Bourges. In this village, most people devoted themselves to the growing of vineyards. After the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, the protestants kept resisting for several reasons : their specific and independent way of life, a less important religious persecution in the area, the insufficient number of catholic priests, and a level of emigration lower than elsewhere. From a stricktly professional point of view, the two communities succeeded in coexisting depite some tensions that can mainly be explained by the superior wealth of the huguenot families. As far as religion is concerned, they both coexisted as well. The calvinist worship still went on, but the protestants accepted catholic baptism and, under special circumstances, wedding services. However, they steadfastly maintained they refusal to conform when it came to the behavior and beliefs with which death should be faced. The Asnières protestant wine growers provide one example among others of a reformed rural community which was still resisting in the 18th century.Cairn

In the history of rural societies, the development of the irrigated agriculture is a relatively little-studied topic. This article analyzes one of the oldest irrigated territories of the Southeast of France. Since the system is still in use today, we can raise the issue of the premanence and renewal of the hydraulic techniques, and of the institutions which govern its operations. By analyzing départementales and local archives, we can construct a historical continuity and track a succession of crises and reforms. Parties in conflict have always made reference to the founding texts, using them as political resources justifying their actions or claims.Cairn

Using information gathered from an archeological dig and from archival studies, this paper follows the growth of a major millstone quarry, the stones of which were exported throughout the Dauphiné province during the xviith and xviiith centuries. The development of this industry testifies to the increasing need of millers and consumers for better flour, and reveals a significant improvement in bread quality.Cairn

This study of Provence under the Old Regime underlines the considerable burden of communal debts, but also their environmental consequences from the mid- xviith century on. Starting in 1640, date of the liquidation générale, the major part of the communal properties of villages fell into the hands of their creditors. The extensive land clearing which followed considerably worsened the impact of bad climactic conditions of the years 1651 to 1711. Thus, the control exerted by « economic » logic over the rural spacespread to ever-widening areas.Cairn

In the département of Seine-et-Oise, the necessity of feeding large armed forces for months on end justified the high cost and the heavy burden of such an occupation on civilians. Of the entire population, farmers and day laborers were the most heavily put upon. However, the good crops in 1814 and 1815 and the fact that a majority of the taxed communities were also the richest ones, explain to a large degree why the département recovered so rapidly from such an hardship. Still, people were deeply struck by the enemy’s violent behavior and by the sight of an enormous waste. However, the civilian population was able to reduce the war costs by negotiating directly with enemy forces or by requesting notabilities to interbene on their behalf.Cairn

In September 1945, Paul Antier founded the ppus (Farmer’s Social Union Party), which replaced Fleurant-Agricola’s pre-war Agrarian Party. Though not very well known, the ppus played a key role in a country where working farmers still accounted for a third of the workforce, by elaborating a new conception of agriculture which required small farmers turned landowners after the French Revolution to adapt to the demands of a quickly growing « modern » economy. The study of the French département of Cantal, the elctoral stronghold of Camille Laurens, one of the prominent leaders of the ppus and former deputy administrator of the Corporation paysanne (a 1940 Vichy institution), provides an opportunity to examine basic political and social issues in post-war France.Cairn

Rural historians can learn much from a corpus in the process of being compiled, that of the communal statutes of the present département of Vaucluse. The case of a small community on the lower Rhône, Gigondas, provides an opportunity to study at the grassroots level the process whereby local legal custom was elaborated, and the respective shares of lord and community in this elaboration. Once written down and agreed upon by all concerned, these statutes covered the area with such a dense network of normative rules that they put into question, among other things, the common conception of agrarian individualism said to be an inherent trait of Southern peasantry.Cairn

The church foundings performed by the Bishops of Tours in their diocese over the 5th and 6th centuries are known to us thanks to a passage which lists them in book x, 31 of Gregory of Tours’ work. But the exact meaning of one of the turns of phrase Gregory uses, v icum aedificavit, remains unclear. The specificities of Gregory’s testimony can be identified by referring to canons of Merovingian councils which dealt with issues related to rural parishes. The collation of these sources leads to reevaluation of all the terms used by Gregory and of realities which these terms were meant to describe, particularly when it comes to the meaning of the words parochia and diocesis. This lexical analysis opens the way to a new hypothesis for the meaning of the vicum aedificavit formula.Cairn

A change of attitude towards work made 18th century agronomists aware of the potential for improvement in this respect, which could pave the way to modernized agriculture. But the farmer and poet Isaak Maus warned his readers against the social and personnal consequences of a shift to an economy excluding fallow lands by comparing a farmer’s basic workload on two differnt farms of the Hessen-Rhineland region, one modernized, the other not. The obvious improvements in agriculture achieved by some Mennonite farmers of the area around 1800 could indeed be seen as « revolutionary ». But as a affecting daily life on the farm, especially for women.Cairn

This article discusses the reasons why the Japanese Land Reform of 1946 was a success. The interpretation according to which this success was mostly due to the policy of American occupation forces is discarded in favor of a multicausal approach, including socioeconomic relations and pressure for reform applied by farmers, followed by ever-increasing government intervention from the beginning of the 20th century on, a series of factors eventually leading to gradual weakening of landowners’ power.Cairn

Reciprocity, gift and counter gift are concepts which have been widely used by medievalists in the last decades. This article analyses the social relations of a Cistercian monastery in Galicia through its exchanges with the peasant communities of its hinterland and the local dominant groups in the 12th and 13th centuries. The authors argue that reciprocity can be a valid means of analysis for the explanation of how new social positions are defined, how hierarchies are established and how social movility and differentiation arise when systems of power are organized.Cairn

Is one really obliged to choose between to equally caricatural views of Old Regime village societies, either almost entirely autartikal and totally closed communities, or sieve-like way-stations in a world of global mobility ? In answer to an article by Alain Croix published in this Journal in 1991, the author maintains that the concepts of rooternes, sedentarity and endogamy are not equivalent, nor are they irreconcilable with those of mobility or openness ; one should combine them all to describe a diverse and changing reality.Cairn

A core sample from a peat bog north of Laval contained 2 m of deposits, which allowed changes in anthropic pressure in the area to be studied from the Neolithic Age until present times. The first traces of cereals were detected from the base of the pollen diagram (5035 ± 70 b.p..), indicating early human activity. During the Bronze Age, the surrounding hillsides underwent a first clearing phase, although it was not until the Second Iron Age (around 2300/2400 b.p.) that a marked development of agricultural and pastoral activities was recorded. After an absolute abandonment of agriculture in the late Empire, a marked increase in farming and herding occurred, together with drastic clearing of all the forests, which created an extremely « open » environment.Cairn

From the 16th to the 18th centuries, the small rural community of Gavre, north of Nantes, tried to retain a few privilegies which it had been granted by the Dukes of Brittany in the 13th century. Because the titles it held came directly from the sovereign power, and were buttressed by extensive archival records, it chose to do so almost entirely through litigation. However, it could not prevent the gradual curtailing of these privileges, a process which accelerated in the 18th centuryCairn

The present article intends to study some aspects of the complex system of personal securities and real estate pledges that local élites had to provide in exchange for the public funds with which they were entrusted. It is based on the rich evidence provided by the Corpus Juris Civilis for municipal affairs in the West, between the 2nd and the 5th century a.d. This preliminary approach shows the limited use of real estate pledges and reveals a preference for personal obligations, which included the whole patrimony and concerned its heirs as well. This fact might be considered as important to determine to what extent elites were linked to their community and should therefore be defined in a local context.Cairn

This article puts forward the hypothesis that the Granii estate in the higher Tiber valley was founded by Marcus Granius, quinquennial duumvir of the triumviral colony of Hispellum. Indeed, we suggest that this founder was an ancestor of Marcus Granius Marcellus, proconsul in Bithynia, whom terracota seals show as the owner of the San Giustino villa, later part of Pliny the Younger’s properties in Tucsis.Cairn

Literary sources often present a traditional image of the Roman woman as wife and mother. However a few inscriptions mainly from Roman Africa, mention vast rural estates owned by women. Epigraphic evidence pertaining to evergetism also reveals the existence of important land ownership for many women donors.
At the beginning of the Empire, the Istrian peninsula was characterized by an important concentration of aristocratic domains, the main activity of which was oil production. Their landlords were senators, often of high social origin and closely related with the Emperor ; but some of them were new men coming from the municipal aristocracy. From the end of the first century a. d. onward, the Emperor captured two of the largest estates in Istria, and became its main landowner. He then proceeded to enlarge his praedia. The situation of the city of Brixia was very different. There, we have far more informations about landed properties of the local élite, even if there was an extension of the senatorial domains by the middle of the second century a. d. Moreover, the native elites in mountainous valleys had kept their estates, in contrast with their Istrian counterparts, elbowed out first by the Caesarian colonization and then by the settlement of the roman aristocracy in the Augustean period.Cairn

Study of Republican Sicily is frequently trapped in a vicious circle, caused by limited evidence and a Romanocentric perspective. The picture of the island under Roman rule is usually negative. New perspectives are possible. A survey of Sicilian epigraphic practice highlights patterns in the Republican period which suggest the importance of local élites and civic identity. Reconsideration of the taxation system points in the same direction. Combined with other recent studies, this suggests a picture of Republican Sicily in which local élites flourish, enabling communities to negotiate successful existence under Roman rule.Cairn

The Southern Gaul Epigraphy can explain many aspects of the elites’ rural estates : concret form of the rural weight, using testimonies cartography, and all the relative social relations.
The study of a specific type of seigniorial property, « arrière-fief », shows that the development of the Laurentian rural landscape and Canadian colonial society was far less straightforward and uniform than has been thought heretofore. A form of property originating in the Paris customs, the « arrière-fief » was governed above all by the choices and aspirations of the people. It was first and formost a social and economic reality. The study of this form of land property and of the motivates and conditions of the concessions reveals a specific social dynamic. The attachment of the vassal lords to their « arrière-fiefs » reveals what was socially at stake in this type of tenure. Moreover, the various types of development and use of agricultural resources it allowed point to its economic importance.Cairn

Today, the history of the rural electrification contributes only modestly to the history of the electricity in general. The objective of this article is to try to mitigate this historiographic shortcoming by presenting the development of electricity in the French countryside. How, in the rural world, was the « mysterious fairy » transformed into an « electric fairy »? The memory of this vast program of rural electrification is little remembered today. But this topic which fascinated our forefathers so much in the inter-war period became again of interest, following the two tornadoes which struck France on December 25 and 27, 1999, since the rural electricity networks and their subscribers were the most affected by this disaster.Cairn

For the last ten years, the institutional leaders of agronomical research in France have been encouraging researchers to look into the welfare of farm animals, a concern raised in the name of current social demand. As a matter of fact, this new preoccupation originates with European Union rules which impose a gradual but apparently inescapable alleviation of the constraints presently bearing on farm animals. The social demand argument obfuscates the history of the relationship between the State and science and their respective roles in the degradation of animal living conditions during the process of industrialization of livestock farming.Cairn

Le menu des repas d’enterrement et la pension viagère accordée à la veuve montrent une importante consommation de viande porcine ou bovine et confirment que l’élevage, encore plus nettement qu’en Lyonnais, y est omniprésent. xivth and xvth century wills from the Forez region, the vast majority of them drawn up for farmers and rural craftsmen, enable us to hear the voice of the cattle breeders of the area. The habitual recourse to vaccas dotales testifies to the importance of cattle breeding in the Monts du Forez ; testators frequently specified the name and even the color of their cows. The habit of placing part of the family’s livestock in someone else’s custody (livestock lease) was widespread at all levels of society. The menus for funeral feasts and the alimony benefits granted to widows prove the important place of beef and pork in local eating habits and confirm that cattle breeding was universal, even more so than in the nearby Lyonnais region.Cairn

Fiscal primary sources such as the Cadastre de la Ensenada (1752-1753) highlight the important role of irrigation in western Galicia and the significant differences in yields which existed between those grain-growing areas which could be irrigated and those which could not. This situation brought about intense conflicts, which multiplied during periods of expansion characterized by far-reaching changes in the productive model, and conversely abated during periods of Malthusian maturity. However, this process diverged within the region under examination due to the cconflicting motives of the actors clashing over the water resources.Cairn

Was the social horizon of xviiith-century French villages open or closed ? This problem was raised again by recent historiography, and is tackled here through the study of land sales. While not very frequent, these transactions created a relation between a buyer and a seller. At first, the analysis of these networks show that they formed a cellular tissue, closely confined within the borders of a neighborhood within which intraparental relationships were essential. However, beyond this horizon of daily life, rural actors also rubbed shoulders with the urban bourgeoisie, and at times even broke free from the yoke of village life by meeting with individuals from remote cities, French or foreign.Cairn

Common until the beginning of the xixth century, the « mal de langue » or glossanthrax disappeared around 1830. It would manifest itself in herbivorous animals by a necrosis of the tongue within a 24-hour period. The French epizootic of 1763 not only illustrates the management, with both its weaknesses and innovations, of an average crisis in animal husbandry under the Old Regime, it also supports an etiological hypothesis : the disease was due to the toxicity of processionary (« stinging ») caterpillars, and more particularly to erucism.Cairn

From the 1860s onwards the Limousin region undertook to improve its local cattle breed by abandoning crossbreeds and introducing foreign breeds for the sole purpose of selection. This was the choice of big landowners and agricultural institutions (agricultural shows and societies, the herd-book later on). But well before this development, fattening had been displaced by the production of young animals, with cows becoming numerically dominant. Farmers’ empirical backing of Limousine cows, buttressed by the pragmatic stance of local notables well aware of the realities of the rural world, thus paved the way to the theory of improvement through selection.Cairn

The founding fathers of the IIIrd Republic made active propaganda efforts aimed at the rural population, and in this context they set out to prove that they were the « friends of agriculture ». Caught between monarchists and radicals, the Opportunists discovered allies among the rural electorate, while peasants became conscious of their own importance because of competition within the French agrarian movement to win their support. French peasants learned to vote, especially in the 1880s, in ways that forced the Republican government to adopt the agricultural policy they wished for, namely protection against overseas conmpetition.Cairn

From the middle of the xixth century to the last quarter of the xxth century, the upper valleys of the Cévennes experienced a far-reaching movement of depopulation, which, together with a State decision to promote reforestation on the main summits and slopes, made for a conflict-ridden evolution. The reforestation process was seen by those peasants remaining in the area as an economic and symbolic dispossession. The rich and varied primary sources documenting this long-lasting conflict provide the historian with an opportunity to link material and symbolic stakes, and to understand the process through which mountains becamee landscapes.Cairn

This paper studies the role played by small urban centers in the structuration through market activity of their surrounding areas, at the same time probing their links with medium-sized cities as well as with the regional capital, Valencia. In the xvth century, the credit market turns out to be one of the main tools for integration and domination of small towns and boroughs in rural areas. What these relationships were, and how they changed over time, can be recaptured through the various forms of peasant credit.Cairn

In Galicia, traditional soil enrichment systems, based on organic additives, remained prevalent well into the xxth century, in spite of a whole series of both qualitative and quantitative shortcomings. In most cases, the volume of available fertilizer per farm was barely enough to cover fertilization needs. Shortcomings arising from the manufacturing, storing and manuring processes put severe constraints on the enriching qualities of these fertilizers. The fertilizing systems of this region were time- and labor-intensive, but technically simple, and implied a close relationship between farmed and non-farmed lands.Cairn

By making hunting rights an attribute of property rights, the French Revolution and the subsequent Act of May 3rd, 1844 resulted in the creation of two categories of hunting in France. Extending over large private domains, the first category excluded the growing mass of hunters, and from the 1880s on came under fire on numerous occasions because of its aristocratic character ; but it was considered entirely satisfactory by owners or leasers of hunting preserves. The second category was governed by the notion of « implied authorization », which opened up access to small parcels of land to all hunters. Paradoxically, at the end of the xixth century, attempts at reforming this latter category in the name of the right of private property failed in spite of the fact that this supposedly sacred right was indeed constantly violated in practice. Ideological denunciations of private hunts relied on reminders of Old Regime turpitudes, while references to the Revolution were used by the defenders of implied authorization.Cairn

Originally, the factory appended to the farm-school of Trois-Croix (1832-1890) which was founded by Jules Bodin near Rennes was only a workshop for the maintenance of the farm’s tools ; but it grew into a small industrial concern. In 1837, for the first time in the region, a threshing machine was used there ; in 1858, Trois-Croix owned three steam threshing machines. From 1837 to 1858, over 16,000 tools were manufactured in the factory, and in 1877, it employed 150 workers. For about four decades, this agro-industrial enterprise managed to bring about increasing use of sophisticated farming tools. After 1878, the factory and the farm-school suffered from an adverse economic context, which eventually led to the demise of both.Cairn

In the 950s, the mid-Italian peninsula witnessed a general restructuring of landholding and a rebuil-ding movement, after three quarters of a century of crisis. The large monasteries, which had had to deal with the Sarracen and Hungarian forays, had never lost control of the land, but the specific forms land improvements would take depended on the choices their managers would make according to the local context. The agricultural tenancy contracts which were drawn thereupon show conclusively that the Monte Cassino abbotts did not dramatically change the existing landholding structure. Instead, through a highly differentiated approach, they tried to make the most of the general movement of growth, at the lowest possible cost.Cairn

In June 1943, Pierre Lebugle, a hand on the little dairy farm of his parents situated in Cambert (Orne,) was required for the Service du Travail Obligatoire. Sent to a very large farm near Berlin, his everyday life moved from the pastures of Pays d’Auge to the cash crops in Neumark. For 21 months, Pierre Lebugle and three friends from his village took part in farm work in a relatively privileged context, which he recorded in his diary, kept until his return home after travelling all the way to Moscow.Cairn

Two permanent elements, limitatio and the ratio of private holdings to public ones, underpinned landholding structures in Italy during the Roman Republic, and have influenced Italian landscapes. The conquest and ulterior fate of lands belonging to defeated people multiplied intermediary situations, neither privare nor public. They did not lose all their lands to full ownership of exclusively Roman citizens. Thus latin colonies, which did not benefit from full citizenship, constituted an exceptional case, both by the significant number of settlers and by the size of the granted landholdings. Also, « defeated » individuals kept or gained back possession of their lands. The Social War (90-88 b.c.) and municipal reorganization brought about a restructuring of landholding law, but did not do away with the multiplicity of situations. Limitatio did not become universally applicable. The variety of landholding situations as well as rights preexisting to the Roman conquest were incorporated in the legal land rules enforceable in colonies, in municipal or prefectoral areas, or in oppida and fora.Cairn

Customary charters provide information on land surveying, but only from a normative perspective. Notaries public, polemen and agrimensors were rarely mentioned, but were credited with speedy techniques, a systematic approach and personal honesty. We cannot piece together any more the morphology of the land from existing sources, because of the variety of perches used. Surveying was focussed elsewhere, on organizing seignorial levies under the vigilant control of the communities. Space itself became a quantifiable accounting category, which brought about proportionality rules and a new rationality. Both the major seignorial and royal rivalries and the countless settling enterprises expressed an interventionist, organizing approach to economic operations.Cairn

While Limousin is often described as a poor country, isolated and archaic, since a long time it is a land of cattle breeding, which turned at a very early date to the trading of oxen, particularly destined to the capital. The favourable environmental characteristics, the use of local produce, both plentiful and low-cost, suche as hay, turnips and chestnuts and the fattening of the oxen during winter, permitted to supply fat animals to the Parisian market at a period of the year during which other provinces as Normandy can offer it only a very limited number of animals. All this show that Limousin is integrated since a long time into the national market.Cairn

In the 19th-century French countryside, conflicts between mayors and parish priests as well as their respective supporters were very frequent, especially in the Haut-Quercy. But these quarrels were just a particular case among others of a type of factionalist disputes, spliting the village into two rival parties. The issue at stake was often a local matter, but may also have had a more political aspect. Yet, the politicization of the village dispute during the 19th century should not be seen as the outcome of a linear process. This paper also deals with the question of the formation of local parties. The author tries to estimate to what extent the position of the village inhabitants in the local web of solidarities explains their affiliation to either one or another faction.Cairn

In response to the agricultural crisis, the French Third Republic and Imperial Germany developped a protectionist tariff policy at the end of the xixth century. The aim was not only economic but also political : the integration of the rural classes into national politics. In France, the Republicans sought the support of the rural population, whereas it was the conservative German parties forming the government, especially in Prussia, which found their electoral basis in the countryside. As a consequence of extraordinary economic growth and an expanding population, agrarian protectionism took an « aggressive » character in Germany, dividing agrarian and industrial classes. In France, by contrast, as a consequence of smoother demographic and economic developments, such protectionnism brought together the middle classes as the basis of the Third Republic.Cairn

La mise en place d’un élevage intensif, ainsi que l’apparition de maquignons locaux et étrangers signalent les débuts d’un âge d’or.Notarial deeds from Catalonia and Roussillon which have been saved since the Middle Ages show massive imports of equidae from the South of France. In addition to these unprecedented exchanges and to the existence of southern French horse-dealers around Perpignan and Gerona, the notary sources indicate the price and quality of the mules, asses and horses coming from various horse-breeding areas. We understand from this how, in the 1400s, the use of equidae became increasingly widespread in Catalonia and Roussillon. The setting up of intensive breeding facilities, as well as the increasing number of local and foreign horse-dealers testify to the beginning of a golden age.Cairn

From time to time, wild-growing Spanish broom has been cultivated on account of its fibres, which could be used to make a rough fabric. The cadastral and notarial archives of the region of Lodève show that the plant was still rare at the beginning of the xviith century, when ploughing was the dominant practice. It began to spread when the extent of fallow land increased. However, it was only in the xixth century that Spanish broom became a massive presence giving rise to new agricultural practices. Peasants not only exploited the plant for making textiles and used the broomfields for pastoral purposes, they also cultivated Spanish broom to fertilize and prepare the ground for the seeding of cereals. Thus, the study of broom and its various uses increases our understanding of the relationship between rural society and the Languedocian countryside.Cairn

South of Caen, the marsh of Allemagne (today known as Fleury-sur-Orne) was, in the 15th century, the subject of a detailed survey map, preserved in the archival fund of the Saint-Étienne de Caen abbey, in the Archives départementales of Calvados. Over one yard in length, the microtoponymy and the surface areas of the plots of land, as well as the names of their tenant holders for 145 hectars of land hemmed in a meander of the Orne, are listed. By confronting it with other maps, as well as archeological and textual sources, one may venture that the local map of Allemagne fitted within the scheme of « marchements » planned by the Caen abbey, and that it came as an annex to a land book drawn up in 1477 and now lost. Just as elsewhere in France or England in the aftermath of the Hundred Years’ War, resorting to a survey map meant using new principles of feudal management in a region generating large profits, and which was a subject of litigation between the abbeys of Caen and Fontenay.Cairn

Present in the South of France from the Middle Ages till the xixth Century, the type of contract called gasailles was not very different from other leases of livestock which existed in others areas in France. Generally profitable, these contracts essentially concerned ovine livestock, but they could also refer to draught or ploughing animals. The records which we are editing today have been selected to give a representative sample of the contracts called gasailles in the French département of Aude.Cairn

During the Middle Ages the royal administration controls the Periodic markets creation and imposes a creation procedure ending up at the writing of a Letters Patent which give permission to a seigniory to gather a market in a definite place and day.
